Included in the sale of Important Americana, the punch bowl was bought at an unrivaled cost of $5,906,500.

Auctioneer David Redden began the bidding at $25,000. Almost instantaneously, Ian Irving, of Ian Irving Ltd., called out a bid for $500,000. As the selling price continued to rise, a total of six bidders joined in the bidding. As the mark reached $3 million, only two bidders remained, New York dealer S. J. Shrubsole and an anonymous gentleman. With the final price of $5.9 million being set by the anonymous gentleman, the previous auction record for American silver was broken. ($775,750).

Rum and punch, anyone?

Before the King of Pop’s untimely death last summer, it was well known that he was planning his “This Is It” tour. He had commissioned Italian furniture maker Colombostile to produce and deliver custom made furniture to a London mansion he was to live out of during the tour.

Totaling a cost of $700,000, the Italian company returned the money to Katherine Jackson and now plans to auction off the unique furniture set.

Among some of the items were a $120,000 sofa, 15 ft long and inlaid with onyx stones. This sofa was also planned to be a prop on stage during the performances. Another red velvet sofa, which was ordered for his bedroom, comes with pillows made out of the very same material used for his clothes.

He ordered an assortment of chairs: one that was covered in shells, one that was purchased for friend Elizabeth Taylor (who was to have a room at his mansion), and one that was embroidered with 25k gold. Lastly, there is a $110,000 handmade desk modeled after one given to King Louis XIV. The desk even features a secret compartment.

While a date for the auction has not been set yet, each of these pieces is expected to fetch millions.

On February 3rd, Sotheby’s will aim at making history. Expecting to create a record breaking feat, the auction house will be hosting an auction of Impressionist and modern art, and is touted to fetch more than £69 million ($111 million).

The masterpieces that are slated to obtain some of the highest sums at this auction include a landscape by Gustav Klimt seized by the Nazis and lost for decades, which is expected to fetch more than £10 million ($16.2million). Klimt’s Kirche in Cassone (Church in Cassone – Landscape with Cypresses) painted in 1913, is the only surviving example of the artist’s celebrated series of paintings of Lake Garda, Italy. Besides this masterpiece, the other two art works that are touted to fetch more than £10 million include a still life, Pichet et fruits sur une table by Paul Cézanne, which has an upper estimate of £15 million ($24.3 million) and a rare life-size sculpture, L’Homme qui marche I by Alberto Giacometti which could fetch as much as £18 million ($29.1million).

This auction at Sotheby’s in London will be the first of Impressionist and modern art to feature a trio of different works with such high estimates.
